LG has now ''accidentally'' dropped some renders of their new G Flex smartphone, a device that has also been called the Z and Z1, confusingly enough. Engadget reports an anonymous source has revealed to them that the device will be announced shortly and launched next month, but there's no other details for now.
But what more do we need at this stage? The simple look of this thing is worth a month of discussion. As you may recall, last week Samsung revealed the Galaxy Round, the world's first curved screen smartphone. And LG are not far behind, although as you can see in the images, instead of a sideways curve like the Samsung, the LG G Flex is warped horizontally, like a banana.
With a 6-inch display, it seems like this thing is going to be a very awkward piece to fit in your pocket – that is, if a 6-inch screen is something that can already fit in your pocket. While I applaud LG for taking a risk, I'm just not sure about this (or the Galaxy Round for that matter). Both devices seem to have about the same amount of bend, but due to the LG's length-wise flex, it is much more pronounced. At least it'll fit your back pocket better. However it may be impossible to get in your front pocket. Maybe you can strap it to your waist instead?
There's no information about just how flexible the G Flex is, but it seems likely that it will simply be playing host to flexible display technology like the Galaxy Round, meaning it is not actually flexible in the standard sense, but is near indestructible thanks to a display that is less rigid and thus more able to absorb impacts, like if you sit on it for example. How this orientation of curvature is likely to affect usability I have no idea yet, but I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
What do you think of the G Flex? Better or worse than the Galaxy Round?
