Some time ago, we wrote an editorial about using the Start screen to start with menu replacement. Feedback was overwhelming and evidently divided. I don't have the Start screen is ideal over a desktop, neither is it a fully competent replacement, however, when you settle about the idea and spending some time configuring the screen want, it's a feasible solution for quickly accessing programs.

The G Pad 8.3 looks strikingly much like Samsung's Galaxy Tab 3 8.. Clothed in most white, these days features the identical rounded corners and ultrathin bezels as Samsung's slate. Over the G Pad's 8.3-inch display is a silver LG logo, off to the right being its front camera. Around the device's right edge are its power button and volume rocker. The superior edge hosts the tablet's headphone jack, built-in IR blaster and micro sd card slot with port cover, while the base has a microUSB port.

Around back, the G Pad's white plastic gives method to an attractive aluminum panel, on the right side that sit the slate's dual external speakers. LG's decision to decide on aluminum over plastic provides the G Pad an even more premium appearance and feel in contrast to the Galaxy Tab 3 8., which has a slippery plastic back.

MORE: Best Tablets 2013

At 8.5 x 5. x .33 inches, the LG G Pad 8.3 is really a hair bigger the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8., which measures 8.3 x 4.9 x .3 inches. Although difference is slight, still makes the G Pad feel larger when trying to carry it with one hand. The 7-inch Google Nexus 7 measures just 7.9 x 4.5 x .34 inches, while the Apple's iPad mini, showcasing a 7.9-inch display, measures 7.9 x 5.3 x .28 inches. Amazon's 7-inch Amazon Kindle Fire HDX is the slimmest in the lot, measuring just 7.thrice 5 x .35 inches.

The LG G Pad 8.3 is additionally significantly heavier compared to the competition, weighing 11.9 ounces. The Galaxy Tab 3 8. and iPad mini are a lighter 11 ounces. Amazon's Amazon Kindle Fire HDX weighs a slight 10.7 ounces.

Display
LG G Pad 8.3The G Pad 8.3 is the first 8-inch Android tablet which has a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels, above the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0's 1280 x 800-pixel panel. However, Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX both feature 7-inch, 1920 x 1200 resolution screens, while Apple's iPad Mini with Retina display offers 2048 x 1536 pixels. And even though the G Pad 8.3 offered sharp visuals -- text on NYTimes.com was free of pixelation regardless if zoomed all the way in -- the display's dim backlighting made for a poor movie-watching experience.

At 273 lux, the G Pad's screen is much dimmer as opposed to tablet category average of 359 lux and wealthy the iPad mini's mark of 432 lux. The Galaxy Tab 3 8-inch offered a higher rating of 477 lux, while the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX topped out at 480 lux.

With such a low brightness, watching videos around the G Pad was certainly not enjoyable. A trailer for "X-Men: Times of Future Past" was nearly unwatchable, with darker colors looking black rather than the correct shade. Near the Galaxy Tab 3 8., the G Pad 8.3 appears like its display brightness is turned down all the way up. Viewing angles around the G Pad weren't very wide, either. When laid flat on the desk, the tablet's display looked far darker than it did if we held it.

When it comes to Samsung and is products, hardly anyone could argue that the South Korean giant's software is one of the most feature-filled out there. TouchWiz, Samsung's take on Android, touts massively diverse features such as Air Gestures, Air View, S Talk, S Health and a mind-numbing amount of others. Despite the arguable usefulness of some, however, there's certainly some truth to the idea that quite a few are actually nothing more than gimmicks that serve mostly to help the sales pitch of Sammy's marketing minds.

But not this time around, as a new patent filing outlines a new multi-party video conferencing feature, much alike to Hangouts. What's unknown is whether the feature will become a part of an existing app, such as Sammy's ChatOn, or it'll be integrated right into the core of TouchWiz. In the case of ChatOn, you already can video chat, but only with one person, which is an unfortunate limitation that really makes no sense nowadays.

In any case, we'll be keeping tabs on Samsung and its patent filings, as we're more than sure that the Seoul-based company will have a ton of new features in time for the introduction of the next Galaxy flagship.

It looks like the days of HTC devices with Beats audio may be over. It all started when HTC purchased a 50.1% stake in the company. The two teamed up to create an audio system for HTC devices, which started out as an inflexible bass-heavy software equalizer that didn’t work well. But they improved the software little by little, and the Beats tech slowly became something worth having.

A year later, Beats had purchased half of HTC’s stake in the company. And as HTC has been falling from grace, Beats has wanted to be free. It’s a growing business stuck with a failing smartphone company, and the founders knew that. So they have decided to buy back Beats in full, purchasing the remaining 25% stake that HTC had.

Previously, those behind Beats have stated that they are a quickly growing business and need to expand to work with manufacturers that can keep up with them. In its current state, HTC can’t. Hopefully that doesn’t mean Samsung will be looking for a partnership. But what will this mean for HTC?

HTC thought of Beats as an “important partner,” and used the Beats technology as a selling point. However, I don’t think this will affect their business much. Not too many people would look at their phones and choose them because they have Beats technology. With how trendy the headphones are, many of the users actually own iPhones in my experience. Plus, they still have their awesome BoomSound technology that they can tune in-house. I don’t think this will have a negative impact on HTC.

The deal will be closing by the end of the year, and while the possibility of HTC using Beats technology after this exists (they would just not hold exclusive rights), we wouldn’t get our hopes up. Do you think this is damaging to the company, or will they survive without a software equalizer and an extra logo? Leave a comment!

The Workbench

The first and perhaps most important step in Guncrafter is actually crafting your weapon so you can destroy all the blocks your heart desires. When you first start out you will only have the smallest workbench size of 4×4 and can only use wood crafting materials. You can purchase bigger workspaces and better materials with coins that you gain from winning matches and other things. Now for a gun to be functional there are really only four things you need; the barrel of the gun where the bullets will come out, a sight to help with accuracy, a trigger and then at least one normal block for it all to attach to. Of course there is no fun in just doing the bare minimal, the fun is making guns that are shaped realistically or craft something that is just crazy looking. Of course as you unlock a bigger workspace you can create very elaborate guns and can even make them multi-layered. In addition as you unlock more materials the statistics of your gun (damage, accuracy, reload speed, etc.) improve and you can mix and match materials such as wood, glass, gold, iron and more into elaborate and “decorative” weapons. I do wish more freedom was in the crafting part of Guncrafter though. As of now you only get the one barrel for instance where I think it would be cool to be able to unlock multiple barrels so you could shoot two streams of bullets and such.

The Shooting Range

Next on the list of important step in Guncrafter is the actual shooting aspect! This is where you get to test how well your crafted gun compares to other peoples. To do this you are put up in various shooting galleries which have set ups such as a large Minecraft block, a car made of blocks or a pyramid set up (just to name a few). The goal is to shoot the blocks and rack up the most points. Each Minecraft block material has a point value which corresponds to how easy or how many shots it takes to destroy it. For instance dirt blocks are worth one point and are very easy to destroy whereas a diamond block is worth a lot and takes a lot more time to destroy. Here within lies a slight strategy of whether you should go for quick easy blocks or target high point blocks only. Note you are competing either against a computer player or on online multiplayer. In addition to the Minecraft blocks you can destroy, each level has a certain number of present blocks which you can destroy for bonus coins. At the end of each thirty second shooting gallery round you get coins for the present blocks you destroyed and coins if you were the winner. These coins then go on to purchase more gun files, larger workspaces and better gun crafting materials. Actual aiming is another interesting aspect. Default controls is using the gyroscope in your device so you physically move your device to aim and the other control scheme is to swipe around to move. Both configures take some getting used to but after a while you get used to it and it works quite well.

Lucky Trees

What do trees and chance games have in common? Not much aside from the fact that they are the other parts that make Guncrafter whole. Basically coins are very tedious to get for how much upgrades cost, so to offset the tediousness of it all Guncrafter implemented a slot like chance mechanic where you can bet either 2, 4 or 30 coins to get various rewards such as more coins to help expedite the coin gathering process as well as trees. The tree aspect of Guncrafter is weird and seemingly out of place but it helps in the coin process. Basically, though, you can get seeds through the slot chance games and then you plant them in a separate farming screen. These seeds will then grow eventually into a coin tree which you can harvest for a lot of coins. Really these two features of Guncrafter are very random and could easily be skipped altogether but if you’re desperate for some coins you may resort to them.

In general I think the idea behind Guncrafter is pretty unique and a great start…but a start is what I would call it. Right now it is essentially one huge grind fest. You start out with a small wooden gun and grind and grind and grind until you have a huge golden gun. Did I mention you grind? Honestly the gameplay as it is now just doesn’t hold up to the grindfest for most people. The levels are all unique and fun but still just typical shooting gallery styles and like I mentioned earlier the guns all shoot the same…just have the potential for better statistics and can be made bigger. I would like to kindly suggest some features to Naquatic that, in my opinion, would catapult Guncrafter from the already seemingly popular game it is now to one that is even more so. Basically I think allowing for better gun variability would be nice. For instance being able to build distinguishable pistols compared to machine guns. This also means being able to have single shot, semi and fully automatic weapons. Another idea that would break the monotony of the grindfest is to perhaps have a mixture of the shooting gallery type levels with levels such as on the rails type games.

Turbo Racing League Review

Like Ultimate Stick Fight, Turbo Racing League is game that really has no right to be as good as it is. The former, a stick-figure karate-fighting game, surprised me because of the number of mediocre stickmanfighting games on the Play Store. The latter is a tie-in based on a kids movie. A kids movie about a deranged restaurant owner who spends his free time racing modified snails on a series of elaborate, hand-crafted miniature racetracks. Yeah. I hope that description gives you some idea as to why I didn’t exactly come into the experience with high hopes.

I’m not too proud to say when I’m wrong, though, and I certainly was here. Despite the tie-in and the utterly bizarre plot the game’s based on, developer PikPok has created an addictive, engaging title that had me telling myself I’d just play one more race before sitting it down to do a review. It also has the most generous approach to microtransactions I’ve ever seen in a freemium game — due in large part to the Dreamworks connection and some obvious Verizon sponsorship, I’m sure — and enough content to keep you doing new stuff pretty much forever. As far as surprises on the Play Store go, it’s tops.

Garden Variety

You’ll spend your first 15 or 20 minutes with Tito, the madman behind the snail racing circuit, showing you the ropes. The whole section is about ten minutes longer than it needs to be. More than once I wanted to grab him by his restaurant’s “uniform” (read: t-shirt) and tell him I knew I needed to touch “Buy” in order to buy the item I’d selected, etc. Once that’s over, though, you’re left to hit the tracks with your squishy, shelled competitor all on your lonesome.

As with a lot of similar Android titles, the racing largely boils down to time-trial modes, each of which has different rules to keep gameplay fresh: One may have you collecting soda cans before you run out of so-called “fuel”, for instance, while others make you hit various checkpoints throughout the track to stay alive, but in the end your main antagonist is always the clock. Standard races come in the form of one-on-one skirmishes vs other snail opponents with names like Speedy and Blaze. Even with the limited modes the game keeps things interesting by only offering you four types of races at a time. Beating one with three stars clears it from the list, making room for the next encounter.

And They’Re Off… Slowly

Turbo Racing League focuses on finesse and handling — though that’s not to say things don’t move pretty fast once you’ve added the appropriate modifications to your salt-allergic racer. You have no control over your acceleration outside of running over booster tiles during races and upgrading your stats between them. Instead, you’re only given direct control over your snail’s movement. If that makes things sound too simple for you, think again. The combination of standard turning and drifting can be surprisingly challenging and a lot of fun, especially as you progress through the ranks and gain access to more difficult events and tracks.

Fair, Fun, Addictive Upgrades

If you haven’t played Fast & Furious 6 yet… actually, nevermind. Don’t play that game. Just know that this game is the exact opposite when it comes to monetization strategies. The currency of choice in the Turbo Racing world is — wait for it — the humble tomato, and they’re positively everywhere: on the track, in your post-race bonuses, and even in your Facebook and Twitter accounts if you don’t mind showing the game a little social media love. You can buy them, yes, but there’s really no reason to unless you’re abysmally bad at the game or the least patient person on earth. I had no trouble unlocking expensive snail spoilers and exhaust systems that come with them, after maybe two hours of gameplay. Things do get a little more expensive as you move up the ranks, but that’s to be expected. A Ford Fiesta costs a lot less than a Mustang. Why would you expect a high-end racing implement/portable home to carry the same pricetag as an ugly old thing from the used shell dealership?

I’ll step off the soapbox after one more point. The game is fairly heavy handed with advertisements. Sometimes you’ll see two of them between races, and many of those are so small it’s hard to hit the X in the corner instead of the advertisement itself. Whether I’ve been conditioned to accept them or I didn’t really mind them to begin with I don’t know. I’m sure, however, that they annoyed me a hell of a lot less than seeing the best equipment possible in the game and knowing there’s no chance I’ll ever be able to afford it without playing way too long or dipping into my own wallet. In other words, the option to buy is there if you want it. If not, you won’t see it. That’s a very good thing in my opinion.

Tracks Out The Wazoo

The track design is top-notch with regard to visuals and variety. Some look like standard racetracks shrunk down to a snail’s size. Others look like the work of, oh, I don’t know, a clinically insane snail racing commissioner, with cardboard roads and hand-drawn advertisements littering the walls on either side of them. Grind rails, which basically work like shortcuts, have the potential to make every lap different from the one before it. Many courses even feature huge leaps, off which your snail can do tricks like spins and front flips. It’s one of the most surprising aspects of an already-surprising game… I could spend a couple bucks on a similar title, see half as many tracks, and still come away satisfied.

Like I said up top, I wouldn’t have guessed in a million years that a free, licensed title based on a Dreamworks movie for children would be half this fun. Even now I can’t wait to finish this review up so I can go do a few more laps. Those racing shells don’t pay for themselves, after all. It’s free. Give it a download. You won’t be disappointed, and if you are, you’re only out a little bit of data.

Love is the inspiration for many things; endless runners included. When mysterious monsters kidnap his girl,Dino Boy is forced to don his rescue gear, a weird looking dinosaur suit and helmet, and set off on an endless run to destroy the monsters and rescue his sweetheart. The game has an instant appeal with colorful landscapes, jaunty music, and plenty of costumes, items and power ups to enliven your journey. But will this be another how-far-can-you-get-before-you-start-all-over-again type of game, or will it offer a justified and interesting result at the end of the journey? Let’s find out.

Before you get started, you have a few options before you. You can login to Facebook to play with friends and compare scores. If you wish to play solo, you can try the tutorial, which at the moment seems to be stuck in an endless loop. Next you choose between button based controls and tilt controls. I’d go with the tilts as they work really smooth and are much better to manage when dealing with the many interactive elements of the game. Next, hit Play.

Of Speedy Runs, Mega Monsters & Fiery Fireballs

Dino Boy Rush initially starts off on an easy pace settling you into the game, before it picks up momentum. The tilt controls let you maneuver Dino Boy to the left and right lanes, but there are also a couple of virtual buttons that help you dodge obstacles along the way. Use the left button to jump or double jump objects and the right button to slide under objects or head butt monsters and bombs. The running platform is littered with alphabets, red and gold stars, bombs, monsters, houses, hurdles, laser beams, razor-sharp stones, wooden blocks and more. Since your run is in auto-mode, all you need to do is avoid the obstacles and pick up as many stars and alphabets as you can. At the end of the first platform, you meet the Big Boss, an octopussy-styled mega monster who spews minions and other obstacles while moving back and forth. Once the big boss battle is over, you are transformed into another platform and the process repeated.

As you progress through the game, you meet more dangers, run at faster speeds, and deal with new obstacles that seem to come on to you much faster, inevitably leaving you with a feeling that the game is designed to ensure you don’t get too far, no matter how good your skills are. You can take comfort from the fact that there are plenty of power ups to keep you happily distracted. Coin loving magnets, extra lives, flying wings, mega sizes, fiery fireballs, invincibility and more. You can also pick up items such as gas masks, glasses, (to highlight missing game letters) helmets, (to head-butt everything that gets in the way) and extra lives in exchange for stars. Not to mention some cool outfits including a Dodgy Fox, a rushing moose, a hadrosaurs, and more. All these elements definitely add variety and glamour to the game.

The Ooohs and the Aaahs

Dino Boy Rush excels in the graphics and animation departments. The visuals are pleasing and the animations smooth, although the virtual buttons could have been better placed. Sitting at the bottom of the screen, it leaves you at a slight disadvantage making you hit empty spaces more often than you like. The tilt controls work flawlessly and I’m super glad the developers got that right because there’s nothing more frustrating than half-hearted responsiveness. The music, set at a jolly and lively pace amply complements the game.

Having got most of the essentials right, Dino Boy Rush, falters in one single aspect. There is no foreseeable goal accomlishment. Despite completing the Boss Battles, you are nowhere close to finding your sweetheart and the objects you pick up along the way don’t offer any clues either. You can touch top scores and travel many many meters but once you lose your three lives, you get right back to the start. This rinse and repeat action starts to wear you out after awhile. Dino Rush Boy would have my vote if it really showed itself to be progressive, but alas it falters there taking away much of its enjoy-ability and replay-ability points.

Nevertheless, Dino Boy Rush is not a game you can ignore. It is free to download, there are no annoying pop up ads to disturb gameplay, the IAPs are completely optional, and there are plenty of social bragging points to be scored; enough goodwill to keep fans of the genre pretty happy.

There are those who take a simple game and turn it into a complex mess of taps, jumps, clicks, double-clicks and swipes and those that employ one simple master stroke – a tap, to deliver brilliant gameplay. Coconut Island Studios, developers of this adorable game definitely belong to the latter. Whether you want to jump across walls or climb up and down ladders, they have managed to use a single tap action to deliver a multi-action game. Combined with the irresistible element of true love in harmonious settings, One Tap Hero will sweep you off your feet. And for the opposite sex, well, there’s nothing like a bit of chivalry in rescuing your lady love, is there?

Sweet Love’s Spell

Our One Tap Hero is a little white blob of a guy, who while wooing his lady love, was come upon by a wily wizard who kidnapped and turned her into a little brown bear. There’s no particular reason for the antagonism, but who cares! it’s time to rescue the sweetheart and restore her back to a lady. How do you do that? Well, traverse the numerous complicated platforms that are littered with obstacles and capture all three stars en route. But mind you, if you miss out on even one star, you’ll find your sweetheart a cross between a bear and a girl!

Variety is the Name of this Game

Because of its extremely short game play (each level lasts from a few seconds to maybe a minute) and its single tap controls, you might be fooled into thinking that this game is a piece of cake. It is anything but. There are enough elements in the game that make it damningly frustrating at times. Take, for instance, the tiny green arrows placed at certain points in the platform; they make the hero turn back from whence he came, making you redo your runs over and over again until you get it right. And when you have walls closing in or fragile platforms that break off on touching, your game will be over in the blink of an eye if you don’t make your move at exactly the right time.

The platforms in One Tap Hero are cleverly designed and offer plenty of obstacles and enticements to keep you engaged for a long time. For instance, there are special keys placed at ridiculous positions which, if picked up, unlock new levels. Then there is the much loved gold coins, which should come in handy when you want to dress up your hero. Nobody wants to see a desperate white guy repeatedly crisscrossing the pretty landscapes naked now, do we! There are also strategically placed portals that transport you to different areas, revolving platforms, floating elastic cushions, pounding hammers, moving poison ivy walls, switches that open and close platforms and more. Each new game element is gradually introduced into the game, making for a delightful journey across levels. Even playing in repeat mode is not tiresome, and you can get deeply engrossed figuring out the best way to tackle the puzzling mazes and bettering your scores.

Sheer Entertainment

One Tap Hero is an action game that brilliantly combines puzzle solving and endless platforming elements to dish out an entertaining gaming experience. The breezy cartoon-styled graphics mingled with a sweet music that almost lulls you into a relaxed state of mind while you play intensely adds to the games brilliance. One tap controls are great most of the time, except when you are stuck with complex puzzles and just can’t get the taps to work the way you want them to. The key with winning lies definitely in taking deep breaths and tapping at precisely the right moments. Sure, you are going to fail quite a lot, but you’ll be armed and ready the next time around. Yet another plus to the game is the pricing factor. The game is free, but ad-supported, and you can play the game to its finish without spending a dime. Completely optional IAPs make it a real winner, but for $1.99, you can not only knock off the ads, but pick up double coins as well as a supercool rechargeable smoke bomb that should give you a chance to occasionally smoke up the place and collect your three stars for free. If you’re on the prowl for a smart, speedy, and fun filled game that’s absolutely free to play for a whole 300+ levels, One Tap Hero should be on the top of your download list.
